Description
A view of the weeping women that stand at the top of the columns at the Palace Of Fine Arts. The seagulls don't seem to have any respect for the historical or artistic value of these sculptures.
From the website of the Exploratorium, a hands-on science museum which used to be housed at the Palace, but has since moved:
"The weeping figures surrounding the boxes on the colonnade were the work of the sculptor Ulric Ellerhusen. Some say they were intended to express Contemplation; others, the melancholy of life without art. These lachrymose ladies were to have been partially shrouded by vines watered by their tears, but funds were insufficient to provide all the greenery that Maybeck had wanted. Therefore the boxes at the top of the columns were never planted. Nor were the redwood trees which were to have surrounded the Palace, to add to the romantic atmosphere."
The Maybeck referred to above is Bernard Maybeck, a well known architect who designed the Palace, as well as numerous other beautiful buildings & houses in the Bay Area...

A super zoom and a great pic.
Thanks for posting. I'm wondering how you got up so you're almost level with the tops of the columns. Good work! :-)
Just a zoom from across the pond - not really almost level, it just appears that way because of the distance.
They're fascinating figures! If it were me, gone to all the trouble of getting up there and peering over the wall, I'd have a better reason than crying into the planters. I bet they're checking out the guys playing basketball or wrestling or something. :P
Absolutely fascinating image and well captured !!!!
Very intersting what folk carve!
Wouldn't you love to be able to talk to the artist? Lachrymose...new word for this English major:) Fascinating subject.
Lachrymose they are, in this cool shot taken of the top of the Palace Of Fine Arts. I wonder what the ladies were crying about. Terrific lush color, contrast, definition and subject matter in this great image.
interesting sculptures and history! We want to you design and carve a great and expansive scene with all the cool stuff.....(Later) ... I'm sorry, we ran out of money and you cannot do any more work - so sorry.
Fascinating!! Very interesting and a very good capture!
Even without the intended plantings it remains a beautiful monument! Lovely capture!
