Description
Captured back on 1/29/12, late afternoon, at the beautiful well manicured Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch and Gardens in beautiful Long Beach, California.
I have no idea as to the age of this simple device.
As for the bottom shot, In order to better depict the full face of the sundial, I had to shoot it from the opposite end to prevent my shadow from obscuring it. Hence, in this particular instance, you're looking at it upside down.

Wow, that is a gorgeous piece of work! Fantastic find and shots, and clever thinking to keep your shadow off of it...
How interesting! I was expecting to see just a "wire" to create the shadow. That's really cool and unique....great shot!
AWESOME... It's really fantastic my friend... Marvelous captures also !
the photographs are as beautiful as these sun dials! excellent shots !!! excellent !!!
Well, I tried to look up the Latin on this sundial, but couldn't find it as a 'phrase' (the words mean something like, "letters don't return"). But, in so doing, I found that there are a whole slew of phrases used on sundials, a lot having to do with mortality or the passage of time (forever lost). Fascinating...In any case, so are these shots, doused, as in the last shot, in this beautiful orange-y red late-day light. The orange light makes the blues of the edges of the sundial-platform stand out. Beautiful contrast. And your angle brings out real drama in the angles, and in the presence of those elephants. And your upside down shot is, oddly, rightside up for the letters themselves. I can't figure out the origin or age of this either---the elephants would indicate Indian origin (esp with the royal garments on top of their bodies and heads). But the rest looks European. And it's clearly glazed painted tile, pieced together into this beautiful presentation. Very fine framing/crop, and the hues and your light are beautiful. I'm so used to seeing early light from you, it's a real treat to see late light---you handle it with the same aplomb you show with early. A beautiful pair of shots. (And such a fascinating sundial too.)
Different and very interesting looking item, I like it.. Great shots Harry and good find!!! Rob
