Earth was dying. Shion Charzide was finally certain of it.
Her friend Aseska warned her of this some six years ago. First it was a vision of a final firestorm that engulfed it. Then as the conflict with the Paklet began and continued Aseska could feel the changes. The shifting of winds, the varying shifts in temperature and weather patterns from one year to the next, the changing behavior of large bodies of water.
Earth already had a problem with global warming before the Melani first arrived. However the war with the Paklet seemed to exacerbate it. Among a lot of other things.
Shion hoped for a better end to this, to all of this. Perhaps through some divine intervention, eventually there would be; but for the time being Shion had a more pressing matter.
She was breveted to Second Lieutenant and offered a post with Special Forces Company 26. That meant she had to leave Earth and return to Hiraaj to prevent that world from succumbing to the constant barrage of Paklet invasions.
Leave Earth?! Leave her friends and allies behind who were still in peril from the Paklet as much as Hiraaj was? And what if Aseska's premonition was on the mark: Earth meeting a very untimely end, and Shion not being with them?
She was ready to quit the Confederate Army so she could stay on Earth, but several of her Earthen friends convinced her to carry on with her duty, regardless where it took her.
