I started following a Dave Frogdot tutorial that you can find here on Renderosity. There are several different of them and all very interesting. I'm just a beginner... but then I put in something of mine. I can tell you that in place of the standard water surface i used a simple Terrain set to Fractal / Mordor and the material I used is David Brinnen Pro Materials / Heavy seas. After this you need a little use of Photoshop to make the most natural thing. Try it and have fun!
