Description

I had always thought that most of Pompeii’s population had escaped the disaster. This was not the case. Mount Vesuvius had rumbled like this before and most of the people were complacent about any danger. Thousands died. At Herculaneum the remains of 300 were found huddled inside stone boat houses. They had come down to the harbor hoping to leave by sea but earthquakes throughout the area made the waters too rough for ships to dock. The most poignant pieces in the exhibit were the small personal items like this marble sculpture of four sleeping puppies.
