Named because of the road pictured. It is a very narrow and convoluted road from Ambleside to the top of Kirkstone pass. The inn at the top goes back to 1496 as a coaching stop. The highest pass in the Lakes for road traffic (1500ft) above sea level. It appears on the road map and signs as "The struggle". This is looking down. For cyclists from Ambleside it is a 4.8km long road but it goes up 400m over that short distance!! ( gradients up to 20% )! It is scary at times in a car as it relies on passing points where it is single track. With all the bends you can easily come face to face with another car or worse! They come down faster than they go up, as do the cyclists! It is cut off by snow regularly in winter when 3 miles away down from the pass there is only a few flakes visible on the ground.
