Description
These are Larch* Trees, a common conifer in the Northwest. They're simply beautiful and were in their glory when we visited Montana.
*Larches are different from most conifers because they're deciduous--they lose their needles each fall. In addition, their needles are arranged differently from those of most conifers; on current-year twigs they're borne singly, but on older twigs they arise in dense clusters from stout, woody pegs that resemble wooden barrels. Only 10 species of larch occur in the world, mostly in cold parts of the northern hemisphere. Only western larch and subalpine larch grow in the Pacific Northwest. Larches are commonly called tamaracks, especially by people whose roots are in eastern North America.

very beautiful capture thanks for the explanation
As a dumb Australian, I've never heard of them!! Seriously though, thanks for learning meeee something!!!!!!!!!!
I never knew that other name! We have a lot here too, and I love them most in spring when they have that gorgeous fresh growth.
Great sense of image !!!!
I'm so glad you got to see these! Aren't they gorgeous? I didn't know what they were when I posted a picture of them, so I looked them up and decided they were tamarack. The ID must have been written by one of those Eastern people! :P This is great!
OK, is it just me, or when I saw the title "Larch" I immediately heard the Monty Python sketch..."and...The LARCH!!" Must be me. This is lovely, and I didn't know any of that nature stuff about them!
lovely colors
With Denise, I TOO thought of the Python sketch, "No. 5. The LARCH...the........LARCH..." ANyway, you've taken this shot in the middle of everything, and it comes at us in a rush; and you've almost rendered this big forest a flat tapestry (that's a compliment). I love the golden trees in the background, like thinner elements in a floral arrangement. Very lush and contrasted work, Marilyn. You saw a lot of beauty on that trip.
