Description

I have been mesmerized by this Bolivian road since I came across a story in a magazine. Built in 1930 by prisoners, it runs for about 40 miles between La Paz and Chulumani. It is estimated that 200 to 300 people a year died on this road, which is built along the side of a mountain. The road is about ten feet wide. with no guard rails, and in some areas, a 2000-foot vertical drop. I came across a video showing a bus driver trying to manueuver his bus, when it tumbled off the cliff. Not for the faint of heart! A new section now runs between Chusquipata and Yolosa, bypassing to the north one of the most dangerous sections of the old "Death Road." Still, some people do use the old road, often with fatal consequences. Downhill biking is now very popular on the road, with.....many bikers.....yes..... dying. Background scene by romangirl. I may try other renders of the Death Road. ____ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yungas_Road
