Vespa crabro
Hornets at the entrance to their nest.
We went again to Arne today before the weather breaks, and did a different part of the reserve as well as returning to this nest, which is at about face level in the tree.
I am pleased with this in spite of the fact it was pretty rushed and therefore not absolutely sharp.
When the flash went off they got rather interested......

Great capture! this would be one that I'd do at a distance, zooming in to get the shot! While I'm not allergic to them, I do not relish the idea of having multiple stings, machine-gun style on my body
