Description
Daldinia loculata,
This very rare fungus is similar to Daldinia concentrica or King Alfred's Cakes, which is a common uneven rounded fungus that resembles burnt buns.
I am fairly sure of the ID as these are on Silver Birch, whereas concentrica is virtually exclusive to Ash.
They are up to 10cm across.

"Cramp Balls?" No it's the way I walk :) Great shot, I am going to Epping forest on Friday for a fungi shoot, If I find them on their respective trees, I will know what I have :)))
Interesting stuff. Definitely some sculptural shapes on this tree. I think I see something akin to the Venus of Willendorf at the top of the growth closest to the camera.
Great capture !!!
They are odd, great capture!!
What a find! A well lit scene makes these blackened lumps really stand out, excellent shot! I didn't know what to expect from the title, only it wasn't a perfume!
They may be "common" in your area, but I've never seen anything like this! Great capture!
Amazing the varieties of nature...these are most odd looking!
How very interesting! Cramp balls, huh? So that's what they look like! LOL! I'm well beyond the age to care any more, but I'm not surprised at their appearance ... that's just about the way they feel!!
wo, very impressive fungi
They look like they are made from metal.
Great Andrea. I have never seen anything like it.

Like the composition, it brings them right out! Well seen
They look like something from my youth - are they brittle? A very special find and great capture!
