Description

The Gatehouse is located at the end of the 'Inca Trail' at Machu Picchu. The previous picture was taken from there. The 'Inca Trail' is by far the most famous trek in South America and is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. It is 26 miles (43 km) long. Beginning at an elevation of 2,600 m (8528-ft) when crossing the Urubamba River the trail ascends to 2,650 m (8,692-ft) at Llacatapata and climbs to 3,100 m (10,168-ft) at Wayllabamba. The trail continues to ascend to 4,200 m (13,776-ft) at Warmi Wannusca. The trek descends to 3,800 m (12,464-ft) at Runcuracay before it climbs to 3,950 m (12,956-ft). It descends to 3,600 m (11,808-ft) at Sayacmarka and climbs to 3,670 m (12,038-ft) at Phuyupatamarca. From here the trek descends to 2,700 m (8,856-ft) at Winay Wayna and finally it ends at Machu Picchu at 2,400 m (7,872-ft). The allocated time is 4 days and 3 nights.During this time trekkers will see the above mentioned Inca ruins, beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle, and a stunning mix of Inca paving stones and tunnels. This picture was taken on 26 August 2014, Sig... The only thing I climbed was to the Gatehouse. 500 people are the maximum allowed per day for the Inca Trail and reservations must be made as much as 5 months in advance during the season.

I'm SO glad you went, and that you took pictures, 'cause there's no freakin' way I'm going there! LOL! Those stone walls are beautifully made, aren't they? In full view there's so much detail. Marvelous!

My knees, angles, feet and shins never hurt so much. 8,000-ft elevation didn't help much either. None of the steps were of the same height or shape, and there were no handrails. Coming down hurt more than climbing up!

Fascinating information and spectacular image! I thought I read somewhere that those who don't wish to climb the entire trail could be driven part of the way. I can understand why you were sore - that's quite a climb!

A POV that we normally don't get to see Sig. All of that beautiful stonework and not a drop of cement to be seen. Another great photo.
