Description
Captured 1/1/14, somewhere around the neighborhood.
I see and record this kind of blight all the time, in alleys, on curbs, sidewalks, around railroad tracks, what have you.

This is something I've never understood--why do people think it's all right to just leave their discarded junk on the street like this? An excellent shot of a sad behaviour, Harry!
Too bad they can't take the time to dispose of it properly, Harry.
Great reportage !
The debris of urban life - nice shot of a not so nice sight. I have to admit to being guilty of doing this one time in my life years ago, though there were extenuating circumstances. It was in NYC & my wife & I had spent a very exhausting hot day getting her brother's stuff out of storage after he had been evicted from his apartment. We were driving a very large rented truck & had spent hours dragging his stuff first down flights of stairs & then up other stairs to a new storage unit. We had started early in the morning, had fought traffic & it was dark & late when we finished, with an old couch left over & no place to put it. We found a deserted street & unloaded it there, hoping someone would be able to use it. Not proud of it, but we really had no alternative - we had to return the truck before the rental place closed & we had to take a flight out of NYC the next day...
Yes, it's sad to see stuff like this strewn all over city streets...but, fortunately, it does make for a terrific photo-opportunity. I love the shot. While it looks random, it's really very sharply composed. It's all about variations on an angle, you get a counterpoint that makes it very rich. Key thought there---these 'minimal' street-shots of yours are quite rich because of the angles you capture, the plays of light and dark, the textures, etc. As an abstract, this is a layered study in overlapping---the mattress and box spring make a rich variation on angles already established by the sidewalk squares. And the lines are taken up by the car-curb, the white parking line, the truck, the line of fern-like leaves in the foreground, the bit of "edge" at the top, etc. It's rich even though it's spare. And you brought out plenty of texture, including the fascinating black rubble on the sidewalk and the black rubble in the parking area, etc. I also commend the crop---the cutoff at top catapults us right into the center of the shot, with its angular mayhem. A really fine massed street shot. And if nothing can be said for the sight---mattresses on a street---you made it into a really fine street abstract. A kind of blue-green theme throughout too. Love the shot.
