Description
The Vapourer
Orgyia antiqua
This was still quite tiny, and I was hoping to see it get bigger but it vanished when the petals dropped!
Some info from UK MOTHS
"An unusual species in many ways, the males fly during the day (although the example depicted was attracted to light at night).
The females are virtually wingless, an attribute normally associated with winter-emerging species, but the adults are out from July to September, sometimes October in the south.
The female lays her eggs on what remains of the pupal cocoon, which then overwinter. When hatched, the very hairy caterpillars feed on a range of deciduous trees and shrubs.
The species is fairly common, especially in suburban habitats, over much of Britain, but more so in the south."

Fantastic capture of this caterpillar, I know as kids we all kind of found them attractive, there were so many different kinds but the fluffy one's were always interesting but of course you can get a skin reaction from them. Often as kids we tended to focus in gardens we played at the many insects and spiders that existed around us. I was always fascinated by ants whoa re so clever and the way they organise themselves and the pecking orders etc. This is a nice find and capture.
Amazing capture Andrea. God bless.
Gorgeous little caterpillar :)
Wow, a very colorful & hairy character & an outstanding capture...
Very pretty colour, great find.
Very nice shot of this wild hairy creature.
With those colorful warning markings,I bet that birds and other predators have learned to leave them alone.A fine shot.

Very good pic
A great shot and info Andrea.
Very good and artistic shot
We found one in downtown Chicago, all those years ago. Gosh ... it must have been nearly five years ago. (How time flies, huh?) Chip was thrilled! :) Such nice memories ...
Cool candid capture interesting species differentiation
Looking at this I realized they are the insect equivalent of paper cutting artists. This is a great image but the flickr one is superb. Outstanding clarity and detail on both.
Really lovely little thing, and great shot!
I have not seen these here in eons, mind you, there isn't much in London any more, just crap shaped buildings and more crap shaped buildings.
cool looking

Excellent capture!
Very hairy and the FlickR version has the best clarity!
