Description
Daldinia loculata,
This very rare fungus is similar to Daldinia concentrica or King Alfred's Cakes, which is a common uneven rounded fungus that resembles burnt buns.
I am fairly sure of the ID as these are on Silver Birch, whereas concentrica is virtually exclusive to Ash.
They are up to 10cm across.

Strange to see. Great find and capture Andrea. God bless.
Flip, never seen them before.
Very interesting, cramp balls I've never seen before. An excellent shot.
most interesting... never seen such fungus !!!
Never seen them either but I have felt them from time to time hehe! This is super Andrea! A testament to the saying that we learn something new every day.
Birch or Ash. What's that they say about any port in a storm? A terrific close up. They have a certain odd beauty.
Put a check in the "Never seen 'em before" column for me too, Andrea. They're quite attractive!
thats some great detail Andrea
Great find - I've not seen these before.
Sounds painful!
That is some weird fungi, albeit beautifully illuminated to display many of its raw and textured features. Burnt buns are what you get when you sit on a hot stove. And cramp balls is what one gets when wearing tight…..oh, never mind.
Nature is surely a wondrous thing, abundant with never-seens and unknowns. Well spotted and a great capture!
Great capture Andrea and I'll be kind and not talk about anything else as it seems that there are those who have covered the subjects quite thoroughly
Fascinating find, could this be a similar species hence being on this tree?. Fine capture. Well done.
The title brought tears to my eyes. Excellent find and shot.
Wonderful and serene.
Well, that's really cool. You discover all sorts of interesting things on your forays! Nice find and capture!
