Description
Ta Prohm was a Buddhist temple built by Jayavarman VII, and dedicated to his mother. It was completed in 1186. It is located about 1 km east of Angkor Thom.
It is one of the few temples in the Angkor region where an inscription provides information about the temple's dependents and inhabitants.18 high priests and 2740 ordinary priests officiated here. Of the 12,640 people entitled to lodgings within the enclosure, 615 were dancers who participated in the rituals.
One of the largest Khmer edifices of the Angkorian period, Ta Prohm has been left just as it looked when the first French explorers set eyes on it over a century ago.
Ta Prohm is a temple of towers, close courtyards and narrow corridors. Many of the corridors are impassible, clogged with jumbled piles of delicately carved stone blocks dislodged by the roots of long-decayed trees.
Bas-reliefs on bulging walls are carpeted by lichen, moss and creeping plants, and shrubs sprout from the roofs of monumental porches. Trees, hundreds of years old - some supported by flying buttresses- tower overhead, their leaves filtering the sunlight and casting a greenish pall over the whole scene.
Ta Prohm is now being restored by archaeologists from India (Sources: Lonely Planet, Cambodia, Sept 1992; 3rd edition April 2000; local tour guide).

A fantastic capture Sig and time has ravaged Ta Prohm! It is amazing that the tree, on the right, has rooted down that wall and is still standing!
Wonderful image. Love the sense of mystery and antiquity which pervades the place.
