Description
National Highway 6 between Poipet on the border with Thailand and Siem Riep, where the Angkor temples are located. The highway had been paved shortly before we traveled on it in 2012 which reduced the travel time tremendously. While there was a steady flow of traffic on a multi-lane highway leading from Bangkok to the Cambodian border, it changed the moment we crossed the border.
Most people walked, or rode bicycles, and some had mopeds. Occasional cars were usually driven by tourists who chose to drive from Bangkok to the temples, rather than fly.
According to 2012 statistics, it is estimated that the average per capita income is less than a $1 per day (Source: Tourist brochure, Intrepid, Cambodia).
