Description
Taken just 30 minutes after my previous shot. The massive in the midground is Mount Abraham.
Lake Abraham is a reservoir so during the winter the water is drawn down for power. Here you can see how the ice has collapsed in massive sheets on the shoreline. This makes wearing climbing crampons an absolute must because if you get onto the lake you cannot get back up the slippery slabs! Aside from that the ice on the lake is windpolished and extremely slick so you need crampons just to get around.
Although it looks like there is open water it is just where the wind has blown away the snow. The ice is a meter deep (a yard) and very clear making it very spooky to be walking on. It is either totally black looking down or near shore you can see the bottom. It is very difficult to tell how thick the ice is and almost every year during the spring thaw some dope goes through the ice along a crack.
It is a very dangerous lake to be on and it has taken many lives. Maybe because of all the Native American sacred sites and graves that got flooded by the dam the lake is taking its revenge. Of course I went out on it as you shall see.
