And the Angels Sing
Titled after a 1939 song of Ziggy Elman (1914-'68), words of Johnny Mercer (1909-'76). The composer was from 1936 to '40 a member of the Benny Goodman Orchestra. This song was a real hit. The band played it in the well known pre-WWII manner, a sweet polished swing style, with Martha Tilton as a vocalist. But Ziggy, his real name was Harry Aaron Finkelman, there played a remarkable trumpet solo in a Kletschmer style.
During the war years the song was a number one hit, played by many bands, e.g. by the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
In 1945 a film musical was made with the same title with a.o. Dorothy Lamour and Betty Hutton.
