Description
Salton Sea
Imperial Valley, California
This area was once under water, but the water has drained away and the mud has hardened and dried. Speculation on the tires? They're often used as bumpers alongside a dock, or to anchor a buoy. But this is the Salton Sea, so who knows where they came from or how they got here?
That's an old concrete dock on the right, and you can see the lake in the background on the left.

as a teenager I stepped on some dry earth like that and immediately sank to my knees. I had the sense to fall back to the bank, or I could have disappeared in it. a sludge pond for an oil pump superb landscape

Most people don't know that vast herds of four-ply tires once roamed across the United States. Some were hit while trying to cross highways. You can sometimes see pieces of them alongside the road. Others, like these, died while trying to find water. They can be seen lying in the empty desert and baking in the sun. The Salton Sea was formed in 1905 when an irrigation damn was breached filling the shallow depression that became the Salton Sea. Over time it has begun to evaporate. You have captured some of the artifacts that were once hidden by the water. Nice work.
It is a pity that no one can pick them up and transfer them to a dumpster somewhere. Interesting shot!

A lot of people like to throw things in water just to get rid of them, too. Who knows how they got here? They make a wonderfully bleak atmosphere here, though. Well seen and captured!

A splendid milieu for a post nuclear holocaust, at least around the Salton Sea. And dead tires means they were once alive and possibly sentient.

This is such a very special photo to me, dear Tara. I love all the textures of the very dry ground, as the tiles gives it such a very lonely feeling. I wonder what are all the colors, as in a row, so small. Because you say the lake is there, maybe it's boats, though, I was also thinking of a train. Anyway, this picture really does confirm my ideas, of what a desert looks like, Tara.
