Description
This chapel is located right next to the Old Port in Mykonos Town. According to our local tour guide, there are 457 churches (chapels) in Mykonos which has a permanent population of around 5,000 which swells to over 50,000 during the summer.
The explanation given for so many churches is that the inhabitants of Mykonos were historically fishermen. When they set out for a fishing trip, often a month or two at a time, they pledged to their Saint that if they return safely they would built a chapel in his or her honor.
Hence the chapels are usually family owned and maintained. And since there are so many saints, there are many days that call for a celebration, and the tradition is that all the friends are invited, and expected to bring gifts. This is a reciprocal custom.
The chapels are usually well maintained, with white-washed walls and blue copulas. As a matter of fact the whole town looks like it was white-washed just before we arrived.

This is one of those pictures we were just talking about, Sig. It's fantastic! The way the boats line up, and the position of the people, the little conveniences (box, can, telephone) lined up just so ... it's got so much going on! Love it. Great shot!
