Description

Coming home from the last session of my photography class yesterday, the sky was filled with gray clouds & it was getting dark. But as the sun set, an opening appeared low on the horizon through which a dramatic red glow was visible. I stopped my car just 3 or 4 miles before I got to my house & tried to capture it as best I could. Not ideal, but I thought still worth posting. Technical details: No tripod (& not really a lot of time to get one set up anyway), so the best I could do to get any decent amount of light was aperture at F/3.1, shutter speed of 1/20 second, & ISO 400. I used auto bracket to get 3 exposures thinking I might be able to combine them to get an HDR image that would capture both the drama of the sky & some detail in the landscape. But I've never been happy with the results I've gotten from HDR under these types of lighting conditions & this was no exception. I ended up blending 2 of the 3 images using layers in Photoshop & this noisy image was the best I could do. Other than being better prepared & bringing a tripod or buying a new & better camera, if anyone has any suggestions on how I could have gotten a better result, I'd be glad to hear them... Still better with zoom, despite the quality issues...

It's very lovely despite the noise; do you shoot in RAW? If so, you can remove a lot of colour noise in Lightroom. I would have stopped to capture this too. I have two tripods, and one lives in the back of my car for this kind of emergency ;)

You were in the right place at the right time, and you knew what to do about it. I love the sunset and especially the way the wave of color seems to follow the curve of the hills.

Capital capture of the sunset glow as evening approaches. Sorry I couldn't read your narrative but I'm very late today.

Nope, no suggestions. I think you did a great job with this. The light on the clouds was the whole point, the rest of the picture provides context, and the result gives me the feeling that I was there. Nice!

Wow, awesome capture!! The hills look like they're a blaze! A camera that shots RAW, tripod with quick release, and a good low light lens (f2.8 or smaller) are your best friends in these situations. I've been caught short so many times, I now carry a Lowepro pack with me where ever I go.
