Description
This is the hillside behind my house. I think I've posted a photo of it before, with snow on it.
When I reduce an image for posting here, I always try to keep the longest side to 1200 pixels (creature of habit). But after postworking this one using the Ink Outlines filter, I found that I couldn't compress it down to under the 500kb limit without pixelating the sky unacceptably - just too much detail. I tried several different methods for smoothing out the sky, but none of them worked. I finally had to settle for reducing it down to 1000 x 750 & that worked. If anyone knows any secret tricks that I could have used, I'd be glad to hear them...

Fine photo Claude. I am afraid my method is close to yours...trial and error...until the result is acceptable. How about shrinking the size of the image down to the size you want and then applying the ink outlines filter? For some reason my experience tells me that once an image is filtered it reacts in an unfriendly fashion to being reduced in size.
Bill, reducing the image size is always my last step, so that I can save a higher resolution version of the finished product.

I'm no expert on postwork except a little with photomatix so I can't help I'm afraid, I like the colours in this and the way the ground slopes away
Buy a better camera and lens? IDK I just work with color and contrast, light and shadow, masking, dodging, saturation and blending, noise and clarity! I never have trouble with downsizing except quality because of size limit. Are you talking ink outline in the filter gallery?
Joe, this has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the original image - it's about the quality of the JPEG compression.

Wish I could help, but I do the same thing you do. I have a limit of how much I'm willing to let it compress, and if I can't get it under, I trim the crop and try again. My vertical standard is 950 rather than 1200 (horizontal is 1200, though). I can't see much more than that at once on my monitor, and that's the only reason for 950. It's a beautiful shot, and I don't feel like it suffers at all from being a little smaller. I have to ratchet my viewing size down to 75% to see the whole thing at once anyway. :P
