Description
The windmills have been used from as early as the16th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Mykonos and the Cyclades were located on major trade routes, and with a year round steady supply of wind, the windmills were used to refine grains and compact it for transport. For that reason, most windmills were located near the harbor on the western end of the island.
After WW I, through the progress of technology, they lost their financial value. Today, seven have been preserved as ikonic symbols of the Cyclades.

Very beautiful. I never thought of the Greeks as having windmills.
Beautiful photo! But you'll come around, and you see much of the world ...
No discussion, the light at the Cyclades is incredible..... Well, as a half Greek one I only can say 10 thumbs up!!!!!

Wow!
Great shot. Haven't seen windmills with this kind of blade structure before...
Beautiful shot! The guy who sells white paint in Greece must be a billionaire. I am glad they have decided to preserve these last remaining windmills.
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
Interesting but I wonder what sort of blades were used. I am guessing they were like sails.
@whaleman. Cloth material was wrapped around the individual arms of the windmill when the mill was not in use. When they were using the mill, the cloth was unfurled, sort of like sails on a sailboat, and spread between the individual arms.
What a gorgeous rustic scene.
Super shot Sig. I have seen some similar to this on one of the Greek islands.
I wonder why they no longer have their blades.
