Description
The Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karakoy quarter of Istanbul just north of the Golden Horn.
The nine-story tower is 66.90 meter tall, has an exterior diameter of 16.45 meter at the base, an inside diameter of 8.95 meter and walls that are 3.75 meter thick, and was the city's tallest structure when it was completed. The tower was built as Christea Torris (Tower of Christ) in 1348 during the expansion of the Genoese colony in Constantinople. The elevation at the ground level of the tower is 35 meters above sea level.
It was built to replace the original tower that was destroyed. It was the apex of the fortification surrounding the Genoese Citadel of Galata.
The upper section of the tower with the conical cap was slightly modified in several restorations during the Ottoman period when it was used as an obervation tower for spotting fires (Source: Wikipedia).
The picture was taken from the Egyptian Spice Bazaar on 29 June 2013,
