Description
You are looking straight down inside a Minuteman 1 missile silo. This was on the tour of Ellsworth Air Force Base I took earlier today.
This particular silo was used for training only, and never held a 'live' missile or nuke.
The control center was not located at the silo - it was actually housed in an underground bunker miles away from any actual silo.
We should get back home tomorrow, and I'll have a lot more photos from this trip to show you. I'll also be getting caught up on comments - it might take a while, but I'll get there! LOL

WOW! The only bad part is that there is no way to gauge the size of this thing. Did they post any information about this? Like ... how deep is that thing? What's the diameter? It's gotta be pretty big.
Let's see if I can remember.... Gah.......... Seems like the depth was about 80 feet, and the silo was around 12 ft. diameter. Here's a link to the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site in S. Dakota. If I'd known this site existed, I'd have visited it since we were so close. I didn't know about this site until we stopped at the S. Dakota Air & Space Museum on the way home.
