My old, heavily-used, very effective, and much loved Coolpix 7900 is breaking down. The door that covers the USB adapter port has long since been gone. I used a piece of duct tape to replace it. Then the battery compartment door wouldn't close any more. I used a rubber band to hold it shut. .Next, the auto lens cover started to not close completely. I used my fingers to help it do so. Now the USB pins or circuitry that connect the camera to the computer have malfunctioned. I use a 'card reader' instead. All little things but they all point to the fact that I have carried this camera around almost every day in my pocket for 9 years and that has taken a toll. In preparation for it's final demise, I have purchased a new P&S. It is a Lumix LX7. I attempted to find a replacement camera that mirrored as many of the same 7900 specifications as possible. I feel that I accomplished that pretty well. Unfortunately, the LX7 is a much more complex camera both in software and controls. With the 7900, I basically really did just have to point and shoot. I can't say the same for the LX7. All the menus and every button, lever, toggle switch, and thumb wheel on it serve double or even triple functions depending on what shooting modes and other settings have been selected. My old brain does not function as fast as it once did so I find myself getting confused a lot when attempting to use it. To add insult to injury, I cannot fold up the camera users manual and carry it around in my pocket because it is not a printed version. It is a digital file that was on a CD that came with the camera and now stored on my computer. When I am out with the camera, have an interesting subject in front on me and my LX7 in my hand, it is quite frustrating to find that I don't remember which sequence of button pushing I need to do in order to get the shot. However, I haven't let that prevent me from trying lol. This is one of my first successful attempts. It is a female Slaty Skimmer. No great colors or bokeh in this shot but it did show me that the LX7 can take pretty crisp images with very good details. I just need to be able to do it much more frequently and much faster. I was lucky in this instance because Slaty Skimmers are notably bigger and much less skittish than many dragonfly species.They also like to perch at specific places and they spend a lot of time on the perch. I spent about 15 minutes and took about 50 shots before I managed to get this one. More to come. My thanks to those who have taken the time to comment on previous postings.
