Description
This view shows the dome and one of the half domes. On the lower right of the half dome is the 'Mihrab'. The entire right side of the picture is obscured by scaffolding used to restore the Tympanum with Mosaics.
The 'Mihrab' is a semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the 'Qibla'; that is the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca and hence the direction that Muslims should face when praying (Source: Lonely Planet, Turkey, 2001, Wikipedia).
This building was constructed 1,476 years ago in less than 6 years.

So interesting.
Beauty
really beautiful place and shot!
Wow! this place is HUGE!!! very nice capture :-)
Hum, that scaffolding wasn't there two years ago when I was there. I hope the renos are successful and not garish as is so often the case in Turkey. This is a place that should be on everyone's bucket list; it reeks of history and power and I can only imagine what it would have been like before the fall of Constantinople.
THis place is amazing sig..
That is just mind blowing! The first white settlers arrived in what is now Seattle in 1851, and the people who occupied this area for centuries before that didn't leave large buildings. We have no seriously old architecture here, and when I see something like this my jaw just drops. Fabulous!!
There weren't many large buildings in Europe either.
It must have been a humbling experience to stand in there and because of the POV of this photo, you had access to more than just the main floor. Outstanding my friend!
Look at that scaffolding...wow!!
@danapommet. Yes Dana. I was upstairs so to speak!
Wonderful shot.
fantastic!!
Interesting photo and history!
You have managed to cram a great deal into this super shot Sig. Not always the best of light in these huge buildings.
I love the composition and pov, but I am missing some sharpness though
