Dogs
If you don't live with one
You may not know
They communicate
Mandy has a certain whine that means
"I have to go out"
A sharp, frantic bark at the end
Means she's ready
NOW!!
A questioning sound
Nose-bump on the leg
Uplifted face
Signals lap time
For one too short
And too old
To get up there herself
At other times
She sits quietly
Her back to the goal
When the couch is required
She stares intently
In the other direction
Butt planted firmly
To announce her
Desired destination
If you come to visit
Please greet Mandy first
She will let you know
In no uncertain terms
That you need to
Make friends with HER
Before you talk to anyone else
Ignore her at your peril
She'll follow you around
Nipping at your pant leg
Insisting you follow protocol
If you've come to deliver something
It's her job to announce you
And then run you off
From her point of view
She's batting a thousand
No delivery person
Has ever moved in
If you don't live with one
You might not know
They can tell time
Dinner is at 5:30
She starts pushing
Around 5:00
Certain that THIS is the day
You'll forget
Even though
Her bowl is always full
It's that tablespoon of
Special goodness
That makes 5:30
A reason to make friends
With the clock
When it's time for bed
She hands out reproving looks
To those still reading
Or playing on the computer
As she heads for the bedroom
Ready to rest up for another day
Of naps
And conversation

The July Writer's Gallery Challenge was "Dogs." It took me until August to figure out what I wanted to say, but although Mandy can tell time, she doesn't know what day it is, so I guess it's all good. :P

A very sweet write up. And yes, they do talk loud and clear. I know which whine or bark means outside, want up on the bed, need hug, want cookie. And they understand our language as well. Cookie, toothbrush, toy, bed, potty, pen, closet.. yes, I cleared a closet out for them and leave the sliding door just open enough for them to get in. They like the den feel it has.

We have always called our dog (excuse me Kai Li) a fur person. She is indeed a person and can indeed talk using her own language and facial expressions. We do not give them enough credit for the incredible intelligence that they keep firmly under their control. Thank God for fur people.

Oh yes, I recognise alot of these expressions and attitudes. A super loving story about your little furry baby :) Mandy is such a pretty little lady :) Magnus isnt barking as much as before. We think he doesnt hear quite as well as before. He just wants his food and to have his naps, lie in the sun for a short while and then have another nap. He is pretty tired, old and to other dogs a bit grumpy. :)

So true, in every way; they know time, and not day, so an alarm wakeup on a workday must be followed up by a concerned wakeup on a weekend..."shouldn't you be getting up now?" And don't get me started on Daylight Savings Time/Standard Time!
