Description
It is summer once again. We have a garden and in this garden are two jelly-bean tomato plants. They are just starting to ripen. How do I know this? Thumper, Hazel and Spot (our resident WILD rabbits) have started their taste testing experiments. They bite into one tomato - not what rabbits like. They bite into another one. Still doesn't taste good. This experiment is repeated on any little tomato that is almost ripe. Being not too high on the "little gray cell" chart, it doesn't dawn on them that the 50th bite is going to be just as unappetizing as the first one and, on the evolutionary changes scale, it probably won't for another 100,000 years. I don't have that long to wait. Especially since they are branching out to nibble on the melon vines. Therefore Ray and I installed a fence around the garden. There were several greenhouse platforms with a broken 2 x 4 on them stored in #4, so we secured them with wire to the upright posts in the raised bed where we have the plant barrels. A few judiciously placed cable staples and a bungie cord and voila! - we have a fence! I just hope the rabbits appreciate all our hard work.
I tried to make a decent thumbnail for this but I gave up when the size had reached 100 x70 and it still wasn't under the 15kb limit.

Cool capture!
They will be a digging if not them ground hogs.
Rabbits and vegetable garden are not compatible :) !
Looks more like a small farm. I understand the frustration with the thumbnail - sometimes, it's better just to select a small area of the image.
Excellent work!!!
Yes. Sometimes the cute furry little critters do wear out their welcome with such antics! Nice photos and solution (I hope) to you nibbling guests!
great shots!
Wonderful garden...keep watching those rabbits!
Hmm... interesting. ")
I'm sure that right now, those bunnies are admiring your skills at fence-building - and probably calling you all kinds of unpleasant things in whatever language bunnies use. LOL! I'm sure they also appreciate the fence as an alternative to.....shall we say other methods of discouragement. :-P
Rabbits are not known for their intelligence. I hope your cage works!
Nice, very nice!
Wonderful capture and story, Teri. You have to sow some carrots for the rabbits too :) Maybe they are hungry :)
time for new hardware... shoot to them with carrots.
Hahaha.. yes Rabbitses, they may not be the smartest, but they are damn quick!
You're a great lady wish more people were like you !!!
nice :). Tell them there are carrots somewhere else
Now be protected the rabbits for the tomatoes, or the rabbits for the tomatoes? Wahaha, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes ... Great done!
Whooo a lot of work to bring them growing fast genre Nice picture of your place to work whit them ((5++))
Much more elaborate than we had, when I was a kid. Mom create a type of maze fence that was easy for us, but hard for the rabbits.
Of course, you could try eating the rabbits ... (Waits for screams of outrage from rabbit-lovers ...)
Good idea! I had pepper plants but the bunnies ate them all.
look like you made this real good
I envy all your wonderful adventures with Nature. So many of us are just so estranged from Nature nowadays. I for one am trapped in a hyper-urban prison in Singapore where nothing I eat is ever grown by my own hands... Lovely garden you have there. Treasure it. Cherish it. (And don't be too cruel to the furry critters, if it can be helped. :) )
What a work!
Talk about rude and wasteful Rabbits, I think connecting an old car battery to the wire might also improve your chances of a crop of Jelly Beans this season ! ~Cheers~
When do I get out, warden? Love it!
Very nice!!!
Great story! George/Teffo
Oh no, they'll see it as a challenge. I know rabbits - and squirrels.
