Description
I walked with Corey in the remnants of a flood. It has been a rainy spring, and so far, a rainy summer; various rivers have flooded at various times, and so whole stretches of Chicago and its neighbors hold silt in various undisturbed corners. The North Branch of the Chicago River flooded rather impressively. The waters have receded, and the silt left behind has become both an anchor and a source of nutrient for growing things.
When I walked with Corey in the remnants of a flood, red-winged blackbirds and grackles made use of the banks of the river. There were countless nests in the area, evidence of such things in the industriousness of parents carrying worms and other assorted food-stuffs to brood after brood of hungry chicks. Rabbits, common enough in Chicago, rustled in the riot of underbrush, and crustaceans ambled across unused, muddy pathways.
I witnessed a very slow, very quiet murder on the day I walked with Corey along the North Branch of the Chicago River; few are ever likely to notice the light-hungry vine, strangling its competition and climbing the future corpses. Violence, I have learned, is often accompanied by a flash of red, and in the redness I spotted along the quiet, muddy bank of a river, a slow, vegetable strangulation revealed itself.
As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all on the verge of a great weekend.

Superb capture my friend. God bless.
At first glance, I thought that was some kind of miniature snake clinging to those stalks. Very cool capture :)
Very cool capture of the crime scene and great narrative Have a great weekend
AWESOME SHOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a wonderful photograph, Chip! Almost scary. A superb composition.
writhingly beautiful
is it alien?
Fascinating! It DOES look alien...
What a strange plant, Chip. I always enjoy your write ups so much. Hugs for all day. Di. xx
Very nice capture. Well done.
I like how you have moved in so close all we see is the strangling tendril, not the vine that produced it. That and the dramatic contrast of the red versus the green is fantastic.
amazing
A wonderful interesting image...
I love the slow stealthy slither of these vegetory tendrils...lovely colour, beautiful curves. Well spotted, Chip!
GREAT IMAGE!
CSI Brunnichia ovate. Its almost as if there is a planned intelligence behind its actions. A brilliant if somewhat disturbing image.
Amazing capture !
Well spotted, it does seem to have a tight hold. xx
That is a stunning picture. Not only the emotional content (which is undeniable) but the color, composition, dof ... all the photo-y things about it are super. Well seen, and well done!
I don't think it's time to call in the Homicide Squad just yet, but I do think the plant cops should be notified. Or maybe one of those SWAT team mediators to help separate them! So this is what you were making pictures of while I was doing over-exposed B/W shots of overgrown paths. Very cool, slightly freaky shot of natural selection in all it's glory. Well seen and great work as usual!
Beautiful and absorbing shot! Wonderful colors and composition. I took a shot of a leaf in a similarly deadly embrace with a vine, but the vine was a more pedestrian green. The red here is marvelous! Gorgeous capture!
