Description
A test render of my lo-res Royal Navy E-Class destroyer model, textured as HMS Electra. Not entirely sure about the colour scheme for the camouflage, but I hope this is near enough to the war-paint in use in 1941 while tagging along with HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales during the pursuit of the Bismarck. Iceflows are rare the South China Sea, but the pattern was retained when she accompanied HMS Prince of Wales to the Far East with Force Z. The objective was probably still confusion rather than concealment. Perhaps the arrival of aircraft changed "everything" but in those days distant air-crews frequently got their scales all wrong and wore out their Morse fingers reporting battleships everywhere. Still, its quite telling that the E-class started WW2 with minimal anti-aircraft capability. The main guns seem to be intended for dualing with other destroyers during "Jutland 2.0"- all there is to fend off air attack is a pair of multi-barrel machine guns amidships between the funnels.

Looks great. Yes, at the beginning of the war, AA-armament was very crude and was build up more and more during the war. Most of the AA-artillery pieces on the ships, as we know today, were added in the last months of the war.
Looks like a worthy addition to the z-force!
One has to remember too, that most of the ships in service at the start of WW2 were re-fitted late-WW1 era ships and that the bulk of most fleets were made up of these older classes of ships. Most had undergone "modernization" rebuilds in the 30's, to improve engines, armour and armaments, and superstructures. Very nicely done Briney! The cammo scheme is fairly close on to those used so far as I can tell... ;)
Nice modelling!!.. I guess that would have been a pair of old quad vickers 50 cal AA guns... fitted to most RN ships interwar but quickly discarded (as possible) once the bunfight started in earnest. If the enemy was close enough to hit with them, you were about to cop a torpedo!
