Description
As a part of my photographic custom dictates, I find quite a number of off-the-cuff photographic subjects while attending to other things: work, for the most part. It comes as no surprise—at least for me—to realize that a sizable portion of the photos I’ve been taking and posting are all due to work. I rather like that bit of continuity spanning my current job, my tenure as a mover of dental equipment, and my employee/resident at a now-defuct hostel in Prague. It comes as no surprise—either—that many of the work-induced photos I capture are photos that have nothing to do with the actual work at hand.
My custom is to spend break-time outdoors (in the smoker’s lounge) and this affords many opportunities to photograph things in the immediate neighborhood of my job. I enjoy moments with urban nature: lichens growing on ornamental trees, red spider mites dining on lichens, the occasional, incongruous mushroom, and many other forms of urban-adapted wildlife. There’s quite a lot of inorganic photographic subject matter to enjoy as well. This image represents such an inorganic find. It is nothing more than plastic wrapped around a light pole. The plastic (Saran Wrap?) was intended to protect a flimsy sign. The sign itself wasn’t worth very much, in terms of a photographic investment, but the plastic formed interesting patterns. Condensation trapped beneath the plastic is what drew me, and as my break began, aged, and died, I considered the condensation-beaded plastic from many angles: much to the confusion of various local business people, thumbing their way through whatever domains of networking sites demanded the actions of their thumbs as they miraculously avoided oncoming traffic.
Of the numerous images I captured (of plastic and condensation) this is one of my favorites. Others, if time and circumstance permit, might find their ways into other images I blend for posting in the 2D and Writers’ Galleries, but until then, here’s an unadulterated, un-tweaked, un-messed-with piece of plastic.
As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all on the verge of a great week.

This photo has the unique ability to captivate the eyes and mind, mainly due to the presentation. To point, try to focus on a part of the photo and your eyes are drawn to other parts; and so it goes
Nice Work,
Actually captivated my brain to figure out exactly what it is. On zoom I can see like droplets. You and your writing always have me wondering and thinking.
UNIQUE !!!
I'm sure you probably say in your narrative what it is, but I don't want to know, so I didn't read it. What I see right away is an alien spaceship and I don't want to ruin it by knowing. I think this is the coolest one you have so far. This is just awesome.
SUPERLATIVE WORK
Yes, I would have been captured by the pattern of water bubbles too; fascinating find and excellent shot, Chip!
Nice photo, it's both abstract and a bit surreal, especially interesting because at the moment I'm looking at this I'm listening to Brian Eno (specifically, his prophecy theme from "Dune") which oddly works well with this photo of yours.
I also find photographic subjects while at work. I don't take my camera though. I work as a mechanic and see many cars that would be great for a subject. However I do not think the owners would like me taking pictures of their cars while I am working on them lol But I enjoy seeing the many different and interesting photos that you post with your stories to go along with them. Thanks for sharing!
Wow. There's so much DEPTH to this, especially considering it's pretty thin! I probably wouldn't have seen this as a photographic subject, but I love what YOU saw and how you presented it. VERY cool!
Oh my gosh, plastic? really? I had to download it to my desktop, flip it this way and that, make it HUGE and examine it and I STILL don't see plastic. I see the interior portions of some strange space vehicle, some exotic never heard of metalic type of material, the depth in this is phenomenal .. giving it even more of a space vehicle feel .. this is the most amazing photo I have ever seen! No, it just can't be plain old plastic. By the way, I like it turned on it's end, with the right side at the top, grins.
awesome....love the way the plastic is playing with the light...excellent imagery... chills and thrills did you say your back in praque???
Quite creative, and a wonderful photo, Chip!
Clever of you to even see this, let alone make such an image!
So many photographers concentrate only on the object (me included) and pay only faint head to others subjects such as texture, light, color, contrasts, lines and layers that are often at least as worthy of interest as any object itself. The other day I found a wrecked bicycle helmet on the street and spent a good 15 minutes shooting it and trying to make a story without moving it from its place of rest. Who would have known this was plastic wrap and frankly, who should really care? There is texture, there is contrast, there is implied movement, any are worthy of interest and are in fact more interesting than a piece of used plastic wrap!
Superb capture my friend. God bless.
I can see what drew you to this although I would have no idea what it was without your explanation. So much of your macros look alien. I can see two faces at bottom center. More aliens perhaps?
I did try to see for a while what it could be, but I gave up. I am glad to see the title, Now I can sleep peaceful tonight :))) I did wonder what it could be. It is a really fine abstract. :)
Told you you find interesting things :o) xx
could be a background for or from H.R. Giger... need a Cigarette now;) stilish and cool!
amazing capture
Interesting. This reminds me of H.R. Giger.
