Description
Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve, outside Alamosa, Colorado.
The tallest dune is somewhere around 750 feet, and it isn't in this picture.
This is an amazing landscape. We're sitting somewhere around 8,000 feet above sea level on the edge of a huge plain surrounded by mountain peaks. Over in the northeast-ish corner of this big flat bowl lies a 30-mile-square dune field.

There are times when a piece of music captures something that I want to say, and in the case of this image…well…it recalls a particular piece of music: one I listen to on a regular basis, one I listened to for years, and always for the same songs. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the orchestra responsible for the music is a Czech orchestra, but it’s from the soundtrack to the SciFi Channel miniseries, Children of Dune. It was produced (like Frank Herbert’s Dune, its prequel) in the Czech Republic, in—of all places—Prague. It was only fitting that I also listen to that music there. With Pavl. With Kača. With Štépán (especially in those socks.) And with Jarda, in Český Krumlov. The piece of music I’m talking about is called The Ghola Duncan and it’s by Brian Tyler. The piece of music, called The Ghola Duncan, says exactly what I want to say about this image. And so here it is, The Ghola Duncan saying the wordless stuff that this image makes me think Click HERE to listen. That bit of music is kinda how I’d say it.

Gives one pause to think about nature's amazing creations. Scenes like this always make me feel so insignificant. Very humbling indeed. Very nicely done photo.

This is mind-blowingly gorgeous and perfectly titled. I love it! The lighting . . . Wow! I think the sky cooperated very well. Cloud patterns or a blue sky would detract for me.

one of your most classic images, it stands, for me, as a representation of several things you do with the camera---not 'things' things, but qualities, feelings, etc. The silken sweep hits us first, I think, but so much else hits us as we look further...The move from dark to light (right to left), the almost imperceptible way it changes as it goes along, the bluish tones which give way to subtle mixes of pinks and browns and lavenders (so much color in here, for all its muted-ness), the details of the sand contrasted with the silken flow of the dunes, and that stunning all-white sky---high key to its fullest---which, being all white, takes nothing away from the layers beneath it, but rather "caps" it, like a beautiful accent. Finally, two people---you couldn't have caught this better---walking back there, giving the dunes scale and humanity---and all off-center too. Ie, the move from a high right side to that tapered left side goes against 'balance' and really brings home the dramatic change and sweep of these areas. it's big and beautiful and intimate---and now I'll try to explain 'intimate' a little: 'intimate' because of the softness, the sense that these dunes are like scarves that we can touch and be enveloped by...that's at least some of it. The tones of the shot are almost all subtle---no loud tones allowed but for the white; which I say because they caress our eyes rather than assault them. Beautiful. Many other beauties in your gallery, to be sure; but this one would make a good welcoming image for the riches that lay ahead...
