Pebbles in the sky is a novel by science fiction writer Isaac Asimov published in 1950.
Joseph Schwartz, a retired Chicago resident tailor, is transported in a very distant future after an incident in a laboratory. Knowing where it is lost in the countryside, he finds refuge with a farmer who takes him for a simpleton, Schwartz did not speak the universal language. It is then made available to a scholar Shekt who, surprised by the archaic characters Schwartz, experimenting on his "synaptic amplifier." Quickly the effects are felt and Schwartz develops extrasensory abilities and learn the language.
He then discovers that the Earth is part of a vast galactic empire formed by humans, but then he thinks the Earth is leading the Empire, he learns that she is a planet of agrarian, backward and partially radioactive considered, as its inhabitants, as the dregs of the Empire, a rebel province that Empire has already had to watch several rebellions and the law of the sexagesimal sever punishment.
While a young archaeologist Empire, Bel Arvardan, investigates a hypothesis that the human race would be born on Earth, and is interested in Schwartz as a possible element of the case, some Earthlings foment a plot that threatens to destroy the population of the Empire by a virus which are resistant Earthlings. Aided by Arvardan, Shekt and daughter of the latter, Pola, Schwartz, though torn between multiple loyalties, managed to prevent the plot. The book ends on a hopeful note: The Empire has its mistakes, the Earth will be helped.
