Sounds like the starter
On an old car

Nope
I don't hear anything
Too weird a sound to leave it be,
I opened the door and looked out.
No longer muffled
The sound changed
Metallic
bang bang bang
bang bang bang
Okay, now I hear it!
bang bang bang

Sounds like a metal can lid
Banging in the wind
Too rhythmic to be the wind
Maybe something mechanical
Finally
Looking up
I saw ...
A woodpecker
Banging his head
Like a heavy metal fan
Pounding on the faded aluminum sheets
Of an old neon sign
Advertising for a mate
Showing off to the world
bang bang bang
bang bang bang
Morning metal
Music to my ears

When we lived in our other house years ago, we had one of these little buggers that would land on the light pole in front of our house, and start pounding on it at 5 in the morning.....Ratatatatatatatatatat.. I called that bird some pretty bad names... :-O A fun poem, Tara! And a cool shot by Bill!
I love a good slice of life, a wonder of reality, something else (most of reality is something else, after all) and great, fun, human perceptions. This poem has it all. I love the rhythms...there's the rhythm of thought, the rhythm of the woodpecker himself (herself?) and the oddness of...well...a metalpecker. I know when spring arrives because it sounds like woodpeckers, robins, and starlings. Ah...birds! You and Bill make excellent collaborators too. Image and text dovetail perfectly, and given the nature of the Bird Challenge, I have to wonder if I just made a pun. Hmmm... I like this. It's pure brilliance.
