The weather has warmed up here over the past week, so I have stirred from my cave and ventured outside to enjoy it. Of course I always take my camera (you never know what you may see). There is a new Red Tail Hawk nest high up in a White Oak tree about 100' from my front door and I have been hoping for an opportunity to get a shot of one of the pair as they come and go. To that end, I have placed a lawn chair nearby that provides the best angle to shoot from but unfortunately; I have not had any success yet. Last Saturday, while sitting in this chair and waiting for a chance to get a shot, I got bored and started focusing in on various objects visible from my vantage point but I couldn't find anything interesting that caught my eye. After 30 minutes or so I decided to take some shots of something uninteresting and see if I could make it interesting, lol. This is one of the many uninteresting object I chose. It is the top of a 5' tall Sweet Gum tree sapling that was about 6' from where I sat. It was on the side of the levee that forms the dam for my pond and the top was at eye level from where I sat. It was late in the day and the sun was about to drop below the treetops to the west of me. When I downloaded the images later that evening, they all looked hopeless but on a closer examination I decided this one might be worth working with because of 5 factors. 1. I liked the fact that it had the 3 primary colors (red, yellow, green), 2. I noticed the spider silk threads for the 1st time. The geometric balances they created were interesting even if they were subtle. 3. The late evening sunlight was tinted with a bit of yellow gold and was 'soft'. 4. The background was far enough away that a pleasing 'Bokeh' effect was present. 5. The image was uncluttered. So here is the result after a bit of digital tweaking. I concentrated on digitally emphasizing the factors I liked. 1. I bumped up the color saturation a bit. 2. I intensified the presentation of the spider silk. 3. I worked on adjusting the brightness and contrast to enhance the soft light. 4. I removed a few bright areas from the background so nothing distracted from the main subject and the spider silk. 5. I added a border that helped set it all off. The end results were better than I expected and I am quite happy with this attempt to create an elegant view of a rather mundane subject.
