Description
This is an American National Monument in Wyoming and is a religious symbol to the American Indians.
I have copied over yesterdays info and would like to add that this formation is exactly like the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland although that one has collapsed. Also Tara spoke of seeing it from many miles distance.
About 50 million years ago molten magma was forced into sedimentary rocks above it and then cooled underground. As it cooled it contracted and fractured into columns. Over millions of years erosion of the sedimentary rocks exposed Devils Tower. The tower today rises 867 feet (approx 290M) from its base and 5,112 feet above sea level. The area of its top is 1.5 acres, the diameter of its base is 1000 feet. Sage grows atop and there is a family of ground squirrels there too.
Zoom works well.

Very nice and love the info again! Great shot!
Amazing capture and view my friend. God Bless.
in Wyoming there is also a place called Devil's Hole. I have not seen it but seen the exit for it on my drive through Wyoming. my mother told me about it, but she only heard stories also another sharp landscape
This is awesome would love to see it.
It appears to be right near the road, I know it must be quite a ways off. Nice shot.
This type of picture always inspires me to read more and to add the location to our wish list:) Glad you got to visit nearby...
Ah I know this place! It was in the film Close Encounters wasn't it? Great view of famous place indeed, well taken. By the way mate, my e-mail system here is shot, I can't receive incoming OR outgoing mails now.. Only see e-bots on site now, so if I'm a bit scatty with comments I'm sorry.. Rob
How extraordinary it looks here!
Always awesome :)
Devils Tower as seen in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. A fun place to visit. Nice shot Jeff.
Also this view from a distance is impressing, as the info is too, Jeff. It's so strange to see it, 'as at once' coming up out of this land.
The tower is the the remains of a volcanic neck. Legend has it that a bear chased a native American up there, and today we see the claw marks. In truth the magma contracted on cooling and caused long vertical fractures in a hexagonal patern when viewed from above. The Giants Causeway fractures are a good analogy. In 1938(?) a fellow parachuted onto the top of the Tower. He was stuck until the Crook County Sheriffs Dept. used boards driven into the vertical cracks as a ladder The low humps seen on the skyline to the left of the tower are the Bearlodge Mountains, also volcanic intrusives. The softer (mostly Jurassic age) sediments have been eroded around the Tower by the Belle Fourche River, which flows northeast.
So lovely Jeff.
I'm thinking Close Encounters.... I haven't forgotten about your grand canyon picture, my heating broke down this week so been busy sorting that out...
Great pano. I'm with tommorules, my first think was this is Close Encounters...
Great panoramic shot of the area around it! It is like the Giants Causeway, isn't it? Fascinating structures.
A fantastic and Huge landmark :-) Lovely photo.
It is such an impressive structure Jeff!
Amazing shot here. hugs Jane xx
Wonderful image! We never got so close as this. It's definitely on my list!
Great image.
WONDERFUL WORK
Very nice shot and colour contrast
The formation of this structure totally amazes me. The rock cycle is really a phenomenon to be, the way over so many millions of years it changes and molds into something of it's own, and it keeps changing with time. A fantastic view, and Thank you for the information!
great shot
look like a big tree stump. real coo shot
It sure does dominate the horizon and a great shot!
Lovely scene; in all the trips I've made across the states I've never seen this. Yet! Wonderful capture!
Great capture. I have been there and it is a favorite climbing spot - or at least it was. There are a whole bunch of Prairie Dogs colonies there - and they are protected by law. In the old days they (the prairie dogs) used to be shot by ranchers because horses had a tendency to brake their legs if they stepped into them!
Very interesting place and very informative description! Is this the place were they made the film "Close encounters? I understand that this was and is a mystic or holy place for indians or others.
