Description
'Precious Metal' #38, a P-51XR Mustang with contra-rotating props powered by a Griffon engine competed in the 2012 Reno Air Races in the Unlimited Gold Race. The Unlimited Race Course is a triangular 8.1034 miles long course. During the week the unlimited class, as do all other classes, fly different heats to determine who starts in the gold, silver and bronze race. The determining factor is speed.
During the week 'Precious Metal' flew the 8.1034 mile long course in 1:02.429 with an average speed of 463.301 mph. During the entire flight around the course, the pilot at that speed is subjected to about 4 to 5 g's.
Unfortunately on Sunday's final Unlimited Gold Race 'Precious Metal' #38 did not finish. It dropped out after the third lap due to a gear door problem.

A superb shot! It would be nice to have a job that payed the kind of cash that would let one enjoy hobbies like this. I wish training for working on something like this would have been an option when I was approached about vocational training in school.
