Description
A relic of a bygone era near Wellington in the Western Cape.
The Blokhuis (Block House) is the most southerly relic of the Anglo-Boer War. It was one of a number of fortified Block Houses built by the British to protect the railway line from Boer commandos.

I see old places like this and what I think of is to wonder about the soldiers that were posted here, who were they, where did they go when they left. I see old places and want to know the human stories the building saw but can't tell. Really good photo.
I like seeing the stones of the place, and how they were laid down. Old fortifications are such interesting places. Thanks for sharing this!

I agree with Tara, old fortifications are such intriguing things...their violent purpose adds to their beauty in a poignant way. I think it's because such structures underscore the frailty of Human life. No matter who's side you're on, it's all the same. Humans die unless they're kept from dying, and fortifications (and weapons) underscore that in incredible ways. Not good, not bad, just incredible. This image brings all of that into focus, and I always have to smile a bit to myself whenever I hear of conflicts with the Boers, because as a child, first hearing about the Boer Wars, I always thought that they were the "Boar Wars." Ah...children. They sometimes think the darndest things! This is a brilliant, deliciously stark photo.
