Description

This is the cargo version of the Colleirs Moon Landerrs designed by Wernher von Braun, the mission would have 2 crewed versions and one gargo version ship in the small fleet. These were serious and credible designs for a manned expedition to the Moon from the early fifties, by Wernher von Braun, published in a series of articles in Colliers Magazine under the heading "Man will conquer space soon!" The structures on the tanks are louvres, black on one side and white on the other, which would flip to provide a simple temperature control system. The long half pipe on a boom near the top is a solar powered mercury boiler. The central long leg acts as a main support and shock absorber, and compresses upwards on landing. The legs only provide balance which is why they are not so strong. You will find the other version elsewhere in my gallery. Nick

Now that's what I call a realistic, functional spaceship. Excellent job - didn't know it was a real design though until I read the description. Whoa!

Oh yes - I find it very interesting to see what they git right, and what they got wrong. The physics was perfect, but in the fifties they assumed it would be like an Antarctic expedition, with large groups of men, and spare vehicles.
