Description
Modeled in 3dsmax. Rendered in LuxRender (v1.0RC4).
I stumbled upon this rather interesting shape while playing around with radial symmetry in 3dsmax. It's a mobius strip with one loop, replicated symmetrically 4 times around the X axis, with a shell and lattice modifier applied after. Exporting to the render engine was a nightmare. The resulting mesh consists of roughly 850,000 polygons, but the problem was getting the vertices welded correctly, so that the exported mesh didn't contain a "rat's nest" where all the axis points were joined to create a single object. The boards beneath it are all simple chamfered boxes, offset from each other slightly, with a wood texture applied.
Best viewed at full size to see the lattice work detail. More to come!

It's very cool, that's what it is!
Welcome to RR, John. Your art is looking very fine to me. Greetings, Mies (or Jacomina) :)
