Description
Montreal Rapids (Lachine rapids)
Park Rapids is one of the six largest urban parks in Montreal in the borough and is part of the network of large parks in Montreal. The park, covering an area of 30 hectares, is the ideal place to observe the famous Lachine Rapids and is a migratory bird sanctuary since 1937, the site with nearly 225 species of birds, including the great blue heron, species protected.
The site has been excavated in 1984, where they found various artifacts proving a Native presence dating back at least 2000 years, including the Heron Island, Goat Island and peninsula island Boquet. It is believed that the place was used as a staging area for fishermen Iroquois.
The foundations of the old hydroelectric Lachine, arranged in 1897 and demolished in 1948 and the ruins of a few water mills were built between 1712 and 1869 are also part of the park.
