Description
Here you can see the pottery kiln on the left and a hole in the ground to fire pottery in the open. The last method was one of the first used to make vessels. It was a method where the temperature was not easily regulated and the loss higher than in the more advanced method of firing vessels in a kiln. To fashion the walls of a pot, the coil technique was used, whereby a series of clay 'sausages' or rolled strips are laid on top of one another. The pottery used by Oetzi and other villagers at this time and geographical area belonged to the Europe-wide Beaker Culture. Another name is Bell Beakers, from the bell-shaped beakers they used. In northern Italy, Bell Beakers sites are spread throughout but have their highest concentration in Lombardy and western Veneto.

Unfortunately Oetzi didn't have any pottery with him, so we don't know exactly which village he came from. In order to have an idea of a vessel he might have used, you can see here: http://www.iceman.it/en/ceramicbowl#schluessel

Great tour Sandra!
Interesting photo.
Interesting Sandra well done!!
Fantastic work
of course he could not carry all his pottery around when crossing the alps hehehe(joking).
Fascinating history. Bell shaped potery was also found at Stonehenge in England. Your pictures and histories make me wonder about Oetzi. Wa he a criminal being chased or was he killed by members of a rival village? Did he have a family that missed him? Did he leave behind children whose descendents are alive today in Northern Italy?
This is really interesting. Wonderful shot, Sandra!
Fantastic capture!!!
a most intriguing commentary, and a wonderful capture of the kilns!:)*5
How hard the life was before. I'm glad to live in this day and age. Super, Sandra
♥ Ein toller Schnappschuss (die haben nach dem Fund vom Ötzi ja den ganzen Berg umgegraben) - schaut interessant aus!
Ötsi is a man of many mysteries. I wonder if we'll learn more about him by actually deciphering his rather cryptic tattoos. He has a few! I love this photo as well. I also love the idea that in a sense, you traveled back in time! Well, it looks like it. All we need to see here, are pots already fired and other pots waiting to be fired, and a patient master or mistress of ceramics, making clay sausages and probably arguing with another clay master or mistress about the relative merits of the "left hand coil" as opposed to the oh-so-common "right-hand-coil"...which the make over in that other hut with the funny-shaped kiln! Ancient, state of the art technology is quite brilliant: so simple and elegant, and what's best is...it still works! Wonderful work here! Fantastic information!
Great picture!
Very interesting picture erland
Superb shot and very interesting informations. That was really a hard life in that times.
