Description
This was one of the graves in the small cemetery next to the church whose photo I posted yesterday. There were a few dozen graves in total, spread over a sandy area with rocks & weeds. A few had headstones, some had small statues, some had small gated enclosures around them & some were just simple crosses like this one. All of them were decorated with colorful flowers. I've always found cemeteries fascinating, though usually because of the elaborate statuary & massive tombs that I've found. In this case, it was the simplicity of the graves & the barrenness of the location that I found striking.
Being there also reminded me of a film I saw recently called "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada", which was directed by & starred Tommy Lee Jones. It was about an illegal Mexican immigrant who was accidentally killed by a Border Patrol agent & his American friend's attempt to fulfill his wish to be buried in his home village. I don't think many people saw it, but I recommend it (if language, violence & sex in films aren't an issue for you)...

This has such a lonely, barren mood about it. We have so many trees in our graveyards here, it feels quite intimate. But this has a vast, empty feeling. I like what you've captured.
I find cemeteries fascinating too. I like the way photographing these old sites gives the occupant a voice on the internet that they would never have imagined having! Great shot.
I love this shot and I bet the body in this grave is very well preserved in all this dry sand!
touching !
Beautiful.
It is nice to see that the person that has passed is forever missed, thought of often, and loved. :))) Very touching image my friend. :))))) Most excellent capture. :))) Thank you for sharing. :)))) Carry A Smile In Your Heart :)))))
I love this shot and i also love going into grave yards just to see if i can find the oldest one and research them and i love that movie u mentioned totally sad but so true.
Many of the reservation graveyards I have visited in Texas were much like this. No grid of graves, no rules for aesthetics, just from the heart and with some of the oddest things on and around the grave. This is wonderful and he was loved - it shows.
A starkly lovely scene and capture!
a lonely and lovely spot to lay your head, the film sounds good, must look out for it
I seen the movie and I enjoyed it. when it comes down to it cemeteries are cold places even with the most extravagant head stones
A wonderful still life study and still decorated!
