Description
Helvella lacunosa.
A very exciting find for me, and so close to my home! I just happened to notice these by accident in a mountain of beech leaves that the folk across the road pile up on the shrubbery that borders our avenue. They have killed the shrubs, but these almost make up for the vandalism.
It was almost impossible to get a sharp shot of them in the very dark situation, ( see Here) so I removed one and brought it into the garden to get a proper shot. As you know this does not kill the organism, which lives below ground: the structure we see is just the fruiting body.
These are widespread and common BUT I have never seen this one before!

OMG...looks like a atomic mushroom. Excellent capture!
What the heck is that??? If you poke it does it fart? (Hey, you never know till you ask!)
Wow girl this is fantastic looks like it could explode anytime love this shot.
Very cool shot! Awesome shroom!
Wow! What a bizzare fungus. Wonderful find and capture. :)

Great looking mushroom - excellent shot!
Wow! wicked find! :)
A first for me too, this is wonderful.
Never heard of these, what a beauty and a great windfall!
It is very nice. I give it a 5+ for you!
Never seen on like that before, lovely.
OHHH GOSH what a pretty one. I really love that shroom. Superb shot. :)
Excellent, I must get out soon on a shroom shoot before the feral youth kick them all down.
A most fantastic shot, Andrea. You have found a beautiful one of this kind. Here we call this "Zwarte Kluifjeszwam", and it's eatable.
An Elfin saddle? must be a pretty lumpy ride, by the look of that ;) but what a treasure to find - never saw a hairdo like it in my life, with or without the body ... this is very special one indeed! BB
Superb capture Andrea. God Bless.
It looks very alien, what a find!!
Looks kind of mutated. Excellent shot, fantastic details and colours.
excellent shot of that mushroom,we can see the great details of the foot and cap [false morel]
now that is really strange and unusual, looks like the Elephant man
Amazing find and capture. Have never seen one before. Is it a mushroom or a fungus ?
WOW I have never seen one of these. What a find. Great stuff Andrea.
That's a strange one I hope you didn't let it fruit in your garden.
What a find! It is such a dramatic structure, like a child's vision of a tree. A truck and mounds of foliage only darker and quite spooky!
very impressive and sexy
Wow, like black peppers melted together! Love the top, the striated stem and the surrounding leaves, A. And, it's widespread and common to you, but a veritable myth to me. You have the market cornered on fungi and insects.
Aw man, Alan stole my line! This is the most bizarre creature I've ever seen. Outstanding capture. The details are great.
I liked Shawn's comment and at first I thought this was gross. Checked out both photos and both are wonderful. I need to pay more attention when I am out walking. You are an education in pictures!
It is a new one for me too. What a fabulous capture of it with all the detail.
