Description
The October Challenge in the Writer's Gallery is "Autumn Leaves." Anyone is welcome to participate! It's not a contest ... only a challenge to see what you can come up with when given a single topic and a time limit.
AUTUMN LEAVES
Cool nights
Football games
School in session
And summer slides out
Like a soft-shoe shuffle
Exiting stage left
Frantic thrashing of
Wind chimes
Announces autumn's
Dramatic entrance
Gongs and cymbals
To herald the year's next act
Dry brown leaves
Swirl like kilts
While bagpipe memories
Accompany their enthusiastic dance
Maples glow in afternoon light
Shimmering like forever
In the burnished late-day sun
Convincing us with languid tones
That they, at least
Will stay a little longer
One last wind storm
Blowing through
Brings winter's chill
And the flaming autumn leaves
Fall down like rain

A lovely poem, Tara! You have so many talents, dear friend! Lovely cover work, too! Ah, Autumn - my favorite time of year....
Beautiful imagery, I can smell autumn in your words.
A lovely poem all about autumn and that is a great image to go with it.
Nice, a fun and even a bit romantic breadth of the season in a wonderfully eloquent style.
Poignant beyond anything I can come up with.
While this is so not my favorite season, you give such richness and color to your words, it's impossible not to feel that change. Beautifully done!!
Thank you Tara for this poem.As many people the Autumn is my favorite season.Have a nice week end!
Very good! 'Swirl like kilts' brought me rushing back to lessons when I was around twelve years old about transferred epithets. So you poem is not only a superb evocation but a time-machine!
Nice, I read your poem looking out the window at golden leaves falling from trees and the first frost of autumn on the ground, only a half hearted one but a sign of things to come.
Superb writing Tara. God Bless.
Beautiful words, my Friend! I had to read it twice... seems like the first time I had to stop and admire the alliteration and the word choices... both the abstract and the concrete metaphors, and then of course a second time for the rhythmic flow of it. So very lovely! I particularly like "forever" described as shimmering! A pleasure to read!
Beautiful Poem Tara. I will stay away from a wrters challenge, as I am a lousy writer.
Beautiful.
Wonderful!
autumnal lyracism at its best
Love Autumn, just wished it stayed around a little longer. Nice poem
This is beautiful, Tara. Summer exits stage left. That's great! Like the season is Elvis: "Summer has left the building!" Always admired those that can create poetry like this. Not a thing that I can do - my brain is wired in a different way, I think! "Bagpipe memories"? Was that just for effect or are you actually of Scottish descent?
A wonderful poem. Bravo.
You know...I really like this...and find Tofi's comment speaks for me too. Well done you:)
I love your words, Tara. "Gongs and cymbals To herald the year's next act" FANTASTIC.
Very beautiful poem
Lovely poem! :)
beautiful lines, Tara!
then the rake follows along with the bags full I chose this one to comment on as far behind I am so wonderful still smiles with thoughts from you warm hugs, Linda Kaye
Autumn Leaves Pretty much like summer leaves Like summer leaves Like summer leaves Like sum...Oh look Some have gone brown And fallen to the ground Oh yeah...it's winter Time to get my sweater Okay, that is a slight exaggeration (sometimes I need a sweater and light jacket) but we don't get much fall color here. Your poem is beautiful. It transported me back to younger days in New Jersey. The descriptions drew vivid pictures while the flow and rhythm of your words set the mood. A great pleasure to read!
