The morning saw us on the road to the Masai Mara National Reserve. As we approached the park it began to rain and we had to lower the canvas curtains to keep the rain from entering the truck. The rest of the day was spent in the outer park viewing gazelle, warthog and topi. Topis are one of the fastest antelopes in Africa, reaching speeds of 80 km/h (50 mph). They can weigh as much as 160 kg (150 to 350 lb) and reach heights of 210 cm (83 in). Oh yeah, they also have the coolist markings of any antelope I saw with reddish brown bodies, dark purple patches on their upper legs and a dark color mask on the face. It was once said that "This is a man's world". While this saying has become obsolete with human beings, it still applies among the topis. While males of other species go to great lengths to attract a female, in Masai Mara, topi males establish leks which are areas where the males are clustered together. The most dominant males occupy the center of the lek cluster and the less dominant occupy the edges. Estrous (also referred to as being "in heat") females enter the leks and mate with the males in the center of the lek cluster.# Females will compete with each other for the dominant males as females come into estrous for only one day of the year. They will aggressively disrupt copulations that their favored males have with other females. Males will eventually chase away these females, refusing to mate with them any more.
