Description
For those of you that know me, I would rather be sneaking around a swamp or local waterway. These are jumbo alligators that lose a lot of body temperature, on a chilly night and have to get along with each other the next day, in the sunshine, to bring up their body temperature. Notice how well fed these guys look. Alligators first appeared on planet earth during the Oligocene period about 37 million years ago. The name alligator is an anglicized form of 'el lagarto', the Spanish term for "lizard". A large adult American alligator's weight and length is 800 pounds (360 kg) and 13 feet (4.0 m) long, but they can grow to 14.5 feet (4.4 m) long and weigh over 1,000 pounds (450 kg). The largest ever recorded was found in Louisiana, US and measured 19 feet 2 inches (5.84 m). In 1937, a one year-old specimen was brought to the Belgrade Zoo in Serbia from Germany. It is now 76 years old. Info from Wikipedia. Photos taken November 2008. Zoom will not increase the size but will enhance the details greatly.
Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated.

WOW...This is a dangerous place Dana, splendid capture my friend, fascinating photo!
They all look like they are smiling. :)))))) Most interesting info on these very large fellows. :))))) Most excellent in details. :))) Most excellent capture my friend. :))) Thank you for sharing all of the beauty you see. :)))) Carry A Smile In Your Heart :))))
When you see them relax in the sun or walking lazily, never imagined how quickly these guys can move when they attack. Excellent capture Dana! Our anniversary is on August 10, so you have been the first to congratulate us, thank you very much :)
They always look as if they are smirking at you. Amazing to see them all!!
Great captures and information Dana!
Super photos of these relaxed folk. They always look smug to me!
Very interesting Dana. We have Saltwater Crocs over here but not alligators....I'm guessing the same level of caution applies to either!!!!!!
Oh no! Isn't that where all those girls were sunbathing? hee hee
Superb capture of these animals, and very interesting infos!
No ones going to steal there spot on the beach.
I have SO MUCH catching up to do in your gallery, but I figure this is a good place to start. And what a place! Alligator Central! I love seeing prehistoric lizards, although these guys (and gals) probably don't consider themselves to be prehistoric. I love the scaly detail and all of the alligator-ish glory of this shot. Wonderful details overall, and a great, somewhat menacing mood! These do look rather well fed, and somewhat smug, as Andrea noted. Brilliant shot!
They look really peaceful and innocent but I wouldn't want to get anywhere near them.
Very cool photos I think they are very cool creatures
These creatures are always impressive, excellent shots and collage and thanks for the infos, Dana !

G o r g e o u s they look ALL STONE ;-)
Oh, taken in 2008...I thought that maybe after they enlarged the pond near your house that these guys had moved in, LOL!!! Great pics!! And yes, they do look VERY well fed!!! Wishing you an air-conditioned weekend!!
gorgeous image!
Oh, terrific clarity, composition and skin textures in this outstanding capture of that handsome bunch, out there warming their innards, Dana. Everytime I see or hear the word alligator I think of shoes for some reason. Incidentally, this reminds me of several similar shots I have of turtles sitting on rafts, warming themselves in the sun. And thanks for the information on the alligators.
fabulous shots
