Driving along a meandering road through scattered rain forest in the Cordillera de Tilaran, north central Costa Rica I came across these signs. I stopped to see whether they gave directions or were advertising. I couldn't really tell, but it didn't matter. I just followed the road.
What concerned me was that I made it back to San Juan before dark, because this road meandered at an elevation between 3,500-ft to about 5,000-ft and after the sun sets, and sometimes during the day, when the temperature drops after sunset or at a higher elevation, the very high dew point forms fog, bringing the visibility down to almost zero. These conditions are locally known as cloud forests.
I was warned by an expat on the aircraft on the way to Costa Rica not to drive in it, but I got caught three times, twice at night and once during the day. At night, one couldn't see either side of a two-lane road.
On this day, later after dark, on the way back to San Jose, I followed a truck, about 25-ft behind it, and I lost the taillights. They just disappeared. I drove through the dense fog at about 10mph or less, because I didn't want to drive off the road. After what seemed like an eternity it started to clear up after the road went to a lower elevation and I made it back.

That's a frightening situation to find yourself in. Here in the UK we have 'catseyes' in the middle of the road which help a lot.

in the 60's, I was driving north of Cheyenne,WY and the fog was terrible.a car past me driving very fast.as soon as it past a car came out of the fog.I tried to look down the cliffs, but since I could not even see the road, I continued on my way good you made it safely.some people act like they have a death wish driving fast in fog

I'm sure there's information there, but I have no idea what it says. Maybe something about a garage? What a hair-raising story! I would have been in the passenger seat with my eyes closed, on the theory that dying while relatively relaxed is better than screaming while flying off a cliff. (It seems to me we may have had this conversation before! LOL!) Besides, there's nothing I could do to help at that point, so you're better off if I'm not gasping in fear every 30 seconds. :)
