Description
This was on display at The Vietnam Veteran's Museum in Phillip Island Australia. It is apparently what the soldiers at the time slept in. Someone like Bill could verify how typical this type of shelter was..........I'm no expert!

Never seen this before either and always thought they camped down in those military style ponchos that made a smaller tent than even this. Fascinating bit of history Andrew.
Not seen one like it before, but on close up looks more like a 'Mossie' net than tent, so it could well be.. Great shot, well found! Rob

Very interesting, looks like slightly 'longer term' accomodation than an over night rest stop.If you want ME, I'll be kipping in the helicopter next door :-) Glad they brought the radio along, though I doubt they'll be listening to 'The Peaceful Hour'.With the hazard of punji sticks to contend with, I can't imagine any soldier being comfortable so close to so much bamboo....using all your gear as 'butt stops' for the uprights would seem a bit impracticle during a downpour too.Great capture, and as said very interesting and handy reference for 'jungle warfare renders'...thanks mate.
It does look like it would take awhile to set up but no problem finding the bamboo.

looks like the walls are mosquito netting.my first trip to the Philippines, my host in a province set up the net for me.I raised it up to fresh air, but about 3 am I put the sucker down as the mosquito dive bombers was headed for me
Oops, missed this the other day. I haven't seen this particular setup before but it looks quite practical to me. I can identify two shelter halfs (buttoned or zipped together they make a traditional tent). One on top and one underneath would work to keep the sleeper reasonably dry in hot/wet SE Asia. And of course, the typical mosquito net enclosure. The bamboo poles could have been easily procured. So, yes...throw in some Aussie ingenuity and you've got a very believable overnight abode here. Thanks for thinking of me:)
